Love Letters to Sudan

About the Artist

Hi, I’m Nour, a 23-year-old self-taught Sudanese artist.

Art has always been a part of my life. Growing up in the small town of Helden in the Netherlands, I spent countless hours drawing and painting, using creativity as a way to express myself and connect with the world around me.

Today, my relationship with art has taken on a deeper meaning.

My people are experiencing violence, displacement, and genocide. Faced with this reality, I often found myself asking: What can I do? How can I contribute, even in a small way?

The answer I found was through art.

When I was growing up, very few people around me had heard of Sudan. Sadly, I still encounter that same lack of awareness today. Many people know little about Sudan, its people, its culture, or the crisis unfolding there. Yet Sudanese stories deserve to be heard, and Sudanese lives deserve to be seen.

Through my work, I aim to share the beauty of Sudan with the world.

My paintings celebrate Sudanese culture, traditions, landscapes, and everyday life. While the hardships my people face are impossible to ignore, I believe it is equally important to show what is worth preserving: our history, our creativity, our joy, and our resilience.

I create art about Sudan because I want people to connect with the country beyond the headlines. When we see the humanity behind a place, we care more deeply about its people. Art has the power to build that connection.

For the Sudanese community, creativity is more than self-expression, it is resilience. It is storytelling. It is preserving culture. It is continuing to create, dream, and hope, even in the most difficult circumstances.

Through every piece I make, I hope to honour my heritage, raise awareness, and help others discover the beauty of Sudan. These paintings are my love letters to Sudan.
