"The care we carry"

Sisterhood has long been an important part of Sudanese communities, shaped by the bonds women build through shared experiences, care and mutual support. This painting captures two Sudanese women wearing traditional toubs, with one looking towards the other with warmth and admiration. Their quiet exchange reflects a familiar kind of closeness, where understanding and reassurance are often expressed without the need for words.
Across generations, Sudanese women have played an important role in creating and sustaining close-knit communities, offering one another guidance, comfort and strength through life's changes. From everyday conversations to moments of celebration and hardship, these relationships form an essential part of community life. The toub, a recognisable part of Sudanese women's dress, further grounds the portrait in a cultural identity that connects women across generations and places.
Through this painting, I wanted to celebrate the quiet strength found in these relationships and the care women carry for one another. It is a tribute to Sudanese sisterhood, to the beauty of being understood, and to the strength that grows when we stand beside one another.
